For 20 years, Storybook Adventures has been a driving force in developing exceptional equestrian athletes in Prince Edward Island. We believe great riding begins with building a strong foundation - from the 'bottom' up. We also believe true horsemanship includes understanding the HORSE - from mechanics to communication and behavior. Producing confident, capable riders, who have respect and appreciation for horses, their peers and themselves, is our mission.
With this in mind, we have redesigned our Summer Horse Camps for 2025
Our Summer Equestrian Academy is designed for riders of all levels, from beginners to advanced; from recreational riders to competitive. Whether you’re dreaming of simply sitting on a horse for the first time or one day, competing at the Olympics, or anything in between, our Summer Academy provides the perfect platform to take your equestrian skills to the next level.
Each week, our SUMMER EQUESTRIAN ACADEMY includes daily riding lessons, stable management sessions, hands-on horsemanship skills, horse and camp-themed games and activities, all culminating in a mini 'horse show' each Friday that will be geared towards the level of riders participating (so beginner riders may participate in a fun-filled 'games' competition while more advanced riders will get the chance to show off their skills in a more conventional 'show' format - including jumping classes if warranted).
NEW THIS SEASON - rather than design a new theme each week open to all ages - we will divide camps by age groups and design skills and activities, specific to the riders ages and skill levels. In this way, we can tailor our classroom sessions, topics and activities to best meet the needs of both beginners and aspiring athletes ... and at the same time create a wonderful 'social' atmosphere, that promotes friendship, personal growth and fun!
We will be sending out an 'INTAKE FORM' this spring to help us get to know more about our horse campers and tailor our 'curriculum' each week.
Below is a list of SOME of the topics and/or activities will we be covering BASED on the experience, interest and skill level of our campers. Beginner riders will of course learn the fundamentals of horse handling and care, grooming and tacking up and the foundational steps of learning to ride, in the safety of our 8400 sq ft indoor riding, while more experienced riders will have the chance to focus on more intermediate/advanced stable management/horsemanship/horse training topics and continue to strengthen and advance their skills.
Stable management/horsemanship activities may include:
- - Horse care, safety and handling, stable management, grooming and hoof care
- - Feeding/nutrition, colors/markings, anatomy
- - Bathing, clipping/trimming, braiding, show preparation
- - Health, first aid, vital signs, bandaging,
- - Tacking up, saddle & bridle fit, parts and proper care of tack/equipment
- - Horse behavior, communication, equine-assisted learning
- - Lunging, horse training/ground work, trailer loading/safety
- - and more!
Riding activities include daily group riding sessions (if space allows, private lessons may be added as required for an additional fee). Lessons focus on core skill development in a fun, interactive atmosphere while our more 'seasoned' riders may also be introduced to more specific disiplines or advanced work, including (but not limited to) dressage, hunter/jumper, cross country, drill team and/or show specific classes:
- - Beginner lessons will take place INSIDE our 70' x 140' indoor arena
- - Intermediate/Advanced lessons may take place indoors as well as outside in our 120' x 220' outodoor sand ring or cross-country field, weather permitting
- - Camps may include a trail ride along the bubbling brook bordering our 24-acre property and through our 'enchanted' forest (beginner riders have side walkers for added safety)
- - End of week 'horse show' may include mounted games, as well as 'conventional' flat classes and over fences (dependent upon rider readiness/skill level)
