Storybook Adventures Inc.

Set on 24-rolling acres, in beautiful Brookfield, Prince Edward Island, our forest, fields, streams and marshland offer a perfect return to nature. Our 50+ animals include horses, goats, sheep, a commercial pig named Fern, several pot-bellied pigs, hens, roosters, ducks, rabbits,  a llama, cow, donkey and more.

Many of our animals are rescues. Once at Storybook, they live out the rest of their natural lives knowing only kindness and compassion. By taking part in our programs you are helping us to care for these animals - the animals in return serve as 'co-facilitators' in many of our programs!

In addition to our popular year-round horseback riding programs, we offer children's camps and other special events that expose families to the transformative power of the natural world - a nice balance in today's tech-rich culture.

I just wanted to say 'kudos' to you and your gang. Once again, the kids had an amazing time at camp, and I can't say enough about you and your staff - professional, friendly, and you make parents feel like every kid is special and taken care of. Every morning when we dropped them off, I knew they were safe, would learn something new, and continue to be amazed with the animals and the outdoors.
I also have to say, you run a great stable. The barn doesn't smell ‘like a barn,’ the animals are clean, groomed, and well taken care of, and every single person is respectful and pitches in. I wouldn't hesitate to board a horse there. Keep up the great work!                   - J. Bouchard

Storybook's mission is to provide a space for people to disconnect from the fast pace of daily living and reconnect with animals and nature in a fun, exciting and heartfelt way. We offer a peaceful and compassionate farm and the animals, in turn, teach us lessons about love, kindness, leadership and living authentically.

We also believe in helping animals in need. As such we are home to Sadie's Place, a registered non-profit that rescues horses who are unwanted, neglected, abandoned or abused. This charity is volunteer-run, relies entirely on fundraising and 100 percent of monies raised goes directly to the care and rescue of horses. Please consider making a tax-deductible donation today and like them on Facebook to help spread the word.

Horseback Riding Lessons
Storybook Adventures is a year-round equestrian centre (indoor and outdoor riding). Our goal, first and foremost, to provide a safe, fun, professional horse experience.

Our riding program places a strong emphasis on developing an independent seat, soft, steady hands and a solid lower leg - we don't skip the building blocks needed to establish a strong foundation. We also believe great riding requires understanding the horse - the mechanics of movement as well as knowledge of horse behavior, to create compassionate, well rounded riders and harmonious partnerships. We specialize in hunters and jumpers but whether you are just starting out, are a recreational rider or a serious equestrian athlete, we have a program to meet your needs. Please see our 'Lessons' page for more info.

Camp programs
At Storybook we believe reconnecting young people with nature and animals is of the utmost importance.

Studies are showing that contact with the natural world promotes children's mental, emotional, physical and social health - activities in nature go a long way toward keeping kids healthy and happy!

We offer several camps throughout the year: Christmas, March Break and all summer long, as well as PD Day Adventures through out the school year.

Our signature five-day Summer Horseback Riding Camps are a sell-out each year. In addition we offer several other day camps, with a wide variety of themes celebrating animals, nature and the environment.
See our 'Camps' page for more info!

Health and Wellness

In 2015, we expanded our services, exploring paths of deepened awareness, personal wellbeing and societal transformation.

Retreats and workshops focus on Rest and Renewal, Passion and Purpose, Mindfulness and Meditation, Leadership and Confidence, and other paths of personal transformation. Check out our news items on the left side of this page or our Facebook page, under EVENTS for more info!

Who we are
Owner Jana Hemphill is a nationally-certified riding instructor with 30 years in the horse industry. She is a five-time provincial show jumping champion and 2002 provincial coach of the year. In addition to being the mom of three awesome kids and wife to a pretty cool husband, she is a writer/journalist, certified yoga instructor and has a special interest in Equine Assisted Personal Development (EAPD). She is also the director of Sadie's Place, a non-profit horse rescue.

Head Coach Colleen Shaw hails from Ohio and is a graduate of West Texas A&M University (BSc. Equine Industry & Business). Colleen was named Outstanding Underclassman for Equine Industry & Business for 2017-18 and Outstanding Senior for Equine Industry & Business for 2019. She was also an NCEA (National Collegiate Equestrian Association) Academic All American in 2018. Years spent competing on the Hunter/Jumper circuit, working as a groom, coaching students and caring for horses round our her extensive resume. Colleen, her dog Felicity and horse Cricket now call PEI home!

Jodie Blagdon has been a fixture at Storybook since 2018. Her care and kindness not only extends to our many animals, but to the children who spend their summers at the farm. As our Summer Farm Camp Leader Jodie inspires compassion and curiosity in our campers as they learn about animals and the natural world. Her patience is second only to her ability to keep the children active and engaged. Jodie has a degree in Sociology and is currently taking the Youth Worker Program at Holland College.

Emily Anne MacQuarrie
has been at Storybook for 8 years as a rider, volunteer, junior barn assistant, Summer Horse Camp Leader and junior coach and she hasn't even graduated from high school yet! Emily Anne brings to the farm, an enthusiasm and a work ethic that is second to none and she is a fan favorite! In addition to being a talented equestrian, she is a superior rugby player who will be taking to the field at UPEI in 2021!

Sylvie Courchesne, a life long animal lover, grew up in Quebec and was first introduced to horses when her mother worked at a stable. This provided Sylvie with the opportunity to help with feeding, cleaning, leading and grooming. Eventually she began riding and throughout her teens, competed in hunters and jumpers. Sylvie is also a certified dog trainer and we are so glad she has made her way to PEI and to Storybook!

Nadine Kay hails from Germany and has been riding horses since she was seven years old. She made her way to Canada in 2019 to help run a horse program at a summer camp in Ontario. A twist of fate (including Covid19 and a chance meeting with an Island boy) brought her to PEI and to Storybook! Her passion for horses, kind nature and incredible work ethic made her a perfect addition to both our farm and coaching team! We are so happy she has joined us!

Set on 24 beautiful acres in rural Prince Edward Island, we take great pride in the experience we offer both our four-legged friends and the two-legged ones who love them.
